- Legality of Online Gambling -

The first thing to know about the legality of online gambling is that millions of Americans gamble online every week, and the legality of it is a complex issue that still has no clear resolution.

Within the United States attitudes vary widely between the states, from Nevada where gambling underpins the economy to Utah where a complete prohibition exists. Most states have some form of legalized gambling including state run lotteries, horse racing etc. Every country has a different take on the legality of online gambling, and these attitudes vary further depending whether you are on the supply or demand side of the equation.

There are a number of Federal acts that may, or may not, apply to online wagering. They are:

1. The Wire Wager Act
2. The Travel Act
3. The Interstate Transportation of Wagering Paraphernalia Act
4. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act
5. The Federal Aiding and Abetting Statute

At the US Federal level Congress has enacted legislation to control commerce, including gambling, across all states, in order to provide better consistency. Most of these laws were introduced prior to the introduction of Internet wagering and gambling.
